The Vedas (meaning knowledge in Sanskrit) are a huge body of texts that originated in ancient India several thousand years ago. Composed in Vedic Sanskrit, the texts are the oldest layers of Sanskrit literature. They are the oldest scriptures of Hinduism. The Vedas are Apauruṣeya (not of human origin). They are supposed to have been directly revealed to the ancient Indian sages by God and thus are called Shruti (That which is heard direct from God).
The oral tradition of the Vedas (Śhruti) consists of several recitations or ways of chanting the Vedic Mantras ( Spiritual Sounds ). Such traditions of Vedic Chants are often considered the oldest unbroken oral tradition in existence.
UNESCO proclaimed the tradition of Vedic Chant a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.The four Vedas (Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva) are not books in the usual sense, though within the past hundred years each Veda has appeared in several printed editions. They are comprised rather of tonally accented verses and hypnotic, abstruse melodies whose proper realizations demand oral instead of visual transmission. They are robbed of their essence when transferred to paper, for without the human element the innumerable nuances and fine intonations – inseparable and necessary components of all four Vedas – are lost completely. The ultimate authority in Vedic matters is never the printed page but rather the Gurus, who are keeping the centuries-old traditions alive today.
The insistence on preserving pronunciation and accent as accurately as possible is related to the belief that the potency of the Veda Mantras ( Spiritual Sounds ) lies in their sound when correctly pronounced.
Mantras or sacred sounds, are used to pierce through sensual, mental and intellectual levels of existence (all lower strata of consciousness) for the purpose of purification and spiritual enlightenment. Vedas say that by sound vibration one becomes enlightened & liberated.
Research has proven that Vedic Chants reduce crime rate and it is recommended that to maintain the impact of positivity in the environment, the Vedas should be chanted frequently.
